The next generation
Why you should read Celeste Marcus---hope from the next generation.
Like most of us, I’ve canceled and renewed and canceled again my subscriptions to magazines. With the New Yorker, alone, I’ve bought and canceled at least three times in the past five years. A few years ago, I stumbled upon Liberties, a quarterly that costs $50. I bought it because its editor, Leon Wieseltier, is a writer I remember learning from when he wrote for the New Republic, another magazine that went through my cancel/renewal cycle quite a number of times. I haven’t read it for at least five years. For all I know, it is now again a terrific publication. At any rate, back to my tagline, “why you should read Celeste Marcus.”
I have no personal knowledge of Ms. Marcus. Wikipedia says she went to Penn and if I’ve done my math is younger than thirty, maybe closer to twenty-five. Age cannot wither her. She is a terrific writer and gives me hope that there are really talented, serious people in the generation behind us, who think deeply and write wisely.
See for yourself. I’ve posted a link to a recent piece she wrote in Liberties.
